BC Heat Pump Rebates 2026: Complete Guide for Coquitlam Homeowners

CleanBC is still offering up to $4,000 for most homeowners — and up to $24,500 for income-qualified households. Here's exactly what you can claim, what changed in 2025, and how we handle every piece of paperwork for you.

Red Seal HVAC Technician · Registered CleanBC Contractor · Founder, HVAC Coquitlam (Est. 2009)

I've been installing heat pumps in Coquitlam since before the rebate programs existed. In those days, convincing a homeowner to switch from gas to electric heating was an uphill conversation — the capital cost alone was a hard sell. That's changed significantly. In 2026, between CleanBC rebates, improved cold-climate heat pump performance, and rising gas costs in BC, the switch genuinely makes financial sense for most Tri-Cities households.

The challenge isn't whether to do it — it's understanding which rebate program you qualify for, what documentation you need, and what actually changed when the province restructured the program in 2025. This guide covers all of it, written the way I explain it to homeowners during estimates: plainly, without jargon, and with the numbers that actually matter.

If you already know you want to move forward and just want to know what you qualify for, skip to the eligibility checklist below — or call us and we'll check for free.

Why 2026 Is a Strong Year to Switch to a Heat Pump in BC

Three things have converged this year that weren't all true at the same time before.

1

Rebate funds are still available — but that won't last indefinitely

CleanBC Better Homes rebates run until funds are exhausted, not until a calendar date. The program has been refunded multiple times, but there have been periods where homeowners had to wait weeks for applications to reopen. Right now, the program is active. Waiting until next fall means competing with every homeowner who had the same idea. In the Tri-Cities, we've seen a 60–70% increase in heat pump inquiries year-over-year — demand on contractor availability and program funds will only increase.

2

Cold-climate heat pumps now perform reliably in Coquitlam winters

This was the legitimate objection five years ago. First-generation heat pumps lost significant efficiency below -5°C, which made them a poor fit for BC's shoulder seasons. Modern cold-climate units — certified to the CleanBC standard — maintain full heating capacity down to -15°C and operate at reduced capacity down to -25°C. Coquitlam's average January low is around -2°C. The technology has caught up to our climate. I now install systems that heat Burke Mountain townhomes on the coldest nights of the year without a gas backup.

3

The cost gap between gas and electric heating has narrowed

BC Hydro electricity rates are among the lowest in North America. A heat pump delivers roughly 3 units of heat energy for every 1 unit of electrical energy consumed — a coefficient of performance (COP) of 3.0. Even as electricity prices have increased modestly, the efficiency advantage means most Coquitlam homeowners see their annual heating costs drop 30–50% after switching from gas. Add the rebates and the math shifts further.

The Two CleanBC Rebate Programs Explained Simply

There are two distinct pathways depending on your household income. Most Coquitlam homeowners will use the Better Homes program. Lower-income households should check the Energy Savings Program first — the amounts are dramatically higher.

Program 1

CleanBC Better Homes — Up to $4,000

For most BC homeowners · Instant rebate at time of installation

This is the standard residential rebate. It's not income-tested — if you meet the equipment and property eligibility criteria, you qualify regardless of what you earn. The rebate is applied at the point of installation by your registered CleanBC contractor, so there's no waiting for a cheque in the mail.

Air-source heat pump (electric-to-electric)Up to $4,000
Cold-climate heat pump (HSPF2 ≥ 9.5)Up to $3,000
Ductless mini-split (qualifying efficiency)Up to $1,000
Dual-fuel heat pump systemUp to $5,000

Rebate amounts are subject to change when CleanBC refreshes program funds. HVAC Coquitlam confirms current amounts before every installation.

Program 2

CleanBC Energy Savings Program — Up to $24,500

For income-qualified households · Income-tested · Full installation support

This program is for lower-to-moderate income households and it is by far the most generous option available in BC. Qualifying households can receive rebates covering the majority of the heat pump cost — and in some cases, the entire installation. This is not a loan or a deferred payment; it's a direct rebate.

What income-qualified households can receive:

  • Up to $16,000 for a standard income-qualified heat pump installation
  • Up to $24,500 for households in the deepest income bracket (includes weatherization upgrades, electrical panel work, and equipment)
  • Zero-interest financing for any remaining costs after the rebate is applied

In my experience, the homeowners who benefit most from this program are those who feel like they "probably don't qualify" and never check. The income thresholds are broader than most people expect — a family of four on a combined household income of under ~$95,000 typically qualifies. It takes us about 10 minutes to verify at the time of your estimate.

CleanBC Rebate Eligibility Checklist for Coquitlam Homeowners

These are the core eligibility requirements that apply to both programs. If you can check all five boxes, you qualify to proceed. If you're unsure about any of them, we can confirm at no charge.

1

Primary residence in BC

The rebate applies to your principal residence — not rental properties, vacation homes, or commercial buildings. Stratas can access different commercial programs. Your property must be in BC, which of course includes Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, and Burnaby.

2

Home must be 12+ months old

New construction does not qualify. The home needs to be at least 12 months old at the time of application. This prevents the rebate from being used on brand-new builds where the builder is responsible for energy-efficient systems.

3

You must be a BC Hydro or FortisBC customer

The CleanBC program is funded and administered through BC Hydro and FortisBC. You need to have an active account with one of these utilities. If you're currently on a different provider (rare in the Tri-Cities), contact BC Hydro to confirm your eligibility pathway.

4

Existing heating system must be replaced or supplemented

The rebate is triggered by installing new qualifying heat pump equipment. This can replace your existing system (furnace, baseboard heaters, old heat pump) or supplement it as a dual-fuel configuration. The current system type affects which specific rebate tier applies.

5

Installation must be completed by a registered CleanBC contractor

This is the one homeowners most often miss when trying to save money by using a cheaper, unregistered installer. The rebate application is submitted by the contractor — not the homeowner — and an unregistered contractor cannot submit on your behalf. The work is also legally required to be performed by a licensed Gas Fitter (if gas is involved) or a licensed Electrician for electrical work. HVAC Coquitlam holds all required licenses.

Income-qualified households: one extra step

If you believe you may qualify for the Energy Savings Program, you'll also need to provide proof of household income — typically your most recent CRA Notice of Assessment or a qualifying document from BC Hydro. We collect this at the time of your estimate, verify your tier, and submit it on your behalf. If you're eligible for the higher-value program and we don't check, you could leave thousands of dollars on the table.

What Changed in 2025–2026: The Updates That Affect Your Rebate

The CleanBC program has been restructured more than once, and homeowners who researched rebates a year or two ago may have outdated information. Here are the changes that matter.

Ended April 2025

The old fuel-switching rebate structure has ended

The original fuel-switching rebate — which offered a specific incentive for switching from natural gas or oil to a heat pump — was retired in April 2025. If you heard about a $6,000 fuel-switching rebate from a neighbour, that program is no longer available in its previous form. The funding has been redirected into the dual-fuel pathway and the expanded Energy Savings Program.

New in 2025

Dual-fuel systems are now eligible for the $5,000 rebate

This is actually a meaningful improvement for many Coquitlam homeowners. A dual-fuel system pairs a new heat pump with your existing gas furnace — the heat pump handles heating down to around -10°C to -15°C, and the furnace takes over on the coldest nights. This configuration now qualifies for up to $5,000 under CleanBC, which makes the transition less disruptive for homeowners who aren't ready to fully decommission their gas system. It's also a lower upfront cost than a full replacement.

Ongoing

Better Homes funds are first-come, first-served

The Better Homes program has run out of funds and been refunded multiple times since its launch. There is no fixed annual allocation — when the budget runs out, applications pause. In 2025, there was one pause of approximately three weeks during peak summer season. If you're planning to switch before the 2026–2027 heating season, installing in spring (April–June) gives you the best combination of fund availability and contractor scheduling.

Still active

Electrical panel upgrades are now bundled into the Energy Savings Program

One barrier to heat pump adoption has been older electrical panels — a heat pump requires a dedicated 240V circuit, and panels in Coquitlam homes built before 1990 sometimes can't accommodate this without an upgrade. The expanded Energy Savings Program now bundles electrical panel upgrade costs into the eligible rebate amount for income-qualified households. This is significant: a panel upgrade that would have cost $2,500–$4,500 out of pocket can now be covered within the program.

FortisBC Rebates: The Bonus Most Homeowners Miss

If your home is connected to natural gas through FortisBC, there are two additional rebates that stack on top of the CleanBC program — though only one of them is commonly claimed.

$50FortisBC rebate

Furnace Maintenance Rebate

FortisBC offers a $50 rebate for an annual furnace tune-up completed by a licensed technician. It's not a large amount, but it effectively reduces the cost of your maintenance appointment by a third. HVAC Coquitlam completes the FortisBC rebate submission as part of every annual furnace service — it takes no additional effort from the homeowner.

$1,000FortisBC rebate

New Gas Connection Bonus

For homes that don't currently have a gas connection and are adding one — for a dual-fuel setup or other gas appliance — FortisBC offers a $1,000 new connection incentive. This applies to properties in Coquitlam that are adding a gas line for the first time, most commonly in newer strata developments that were built all-electric.

Can you combine FortisBC and CleanBC rebates?

Yes — the FortisBC rebates are separate from the CleanBC program and can be claimed alongside them. The $1,000 new connection bonus applies to the gas infrastructure cost, not the heat pump equipment, so there's no overlap. We track all applicable rebates for every installation and ensure nothing is left unclaimed.

How HVAC Coquitlam Handles Your Rebate Paperwork

The rebate process has a reputation for being complicated. In practice, for the homeowner, it involves three things: providing proof of income (if income-qualified), signing the rebate application, and letting us handle the rest. Here's exactly what that looks like.

1

Free pre-installation rebate assessment

Before we quote anything, we confirm which program(s) you qualify for, the exact rebate amount applicable to your home, and whether the income-qualified program changes the calculus. This takes about 10 minutes at your estimate appointment. If you're close to an income threshold, we'll tell you how to document your eligibility to claim the higher rebate.

2

Equipment selection based on rebate eligibility

We only quote heat pump equipment that meets CleanBC's minimum performance standards (HSPF2 and COP ratings). Some contractors install equipment that meets minimum building code but falls just short of rebate thresholds — costing the homeowner the entire rebate. Every unit we install is selected to qualify for the maximum applicable rebate tier.

3

Rebate application submitted on your behalf

As a registered CleanBC contractor, we submit the rebate application directly to the program administrator. For the Better Homes instant rebate, the discount is applied at the time of invoicing — you see it immediately. For the Energy Savings Program, we submit the full documentation package and track the processing timeline. You don't need to log into any government portal or chase anything.

4

FortisBC submissions handled simultaneously

If your installation includes a FortisBC-eligible rebate (new connection bonus, furnace maintenance), we submit that application in parallel. You sign once; we file everything separately to the correct program administrator.

5

Follow-up if processing is delayed

If your Energy Savings Program application is delayed past the standard 6–10 week window, we follow up with CleanBC on your behalf. This is particularly common in spring when volume is high. We don't consider the job complete until your rebate has been confirmed and received.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I combine the CleanBC Better Homes rebate with the Energy Savings Program?

No — you can only use one CleanBC program per installation. If you are income-qualified, the Energy Savings Program offers substantially more (up to $24,500) and should be your first choice. If you don't qualify, the Better Homes rebate of up to $4,000 is applied at point-of-purchase. Your HVAC Coquitlam technician will confirm which program you're eligible for before installation.

How long does it take to receive the CleanBC rebate?

For Better Homes instant rebates, the discount is applied at the time of installation — there's no waiting period because the contractor submits on your behalf. For the Energy Savings Program, the processing timeline is typically 6–10 weeks after all documentation is submitted. HVAC Coquitlam tracks the submission for you and follows up if there are delays.

What heat pump brands qualify for CleanBC rebates in BC?

CleanBC rebates are tied to equipment performance ratings (HSPF2 and COP), not specific brands. Most major cold-climate heat pumps from Mitsubishi, Daikin, Bosch, LG, and Carrier qualify — provided they meet the minimum efficiency thresholds. The equipment must also be installed by a registered CleanBC contractor. HVAC Coquitlam only installs rebate-eligible equipment and confirms qualification before quoting.

Does my heat pump have to replace a gas furnace to qualify?

Not necessarily. As of 2025, dual-fuel systems (a heat pump paired with an existing gas furnace) are eligible for the $5,000 fuel-switching rebate. Full electric-to-electric heat pump upgrades qualify under the Better Homes program. The older fuel-switching rebate structure ended April 2025 and was replaced with the current dual-fuel pathway.

What is the income threshold for the CleanBC Energy Savings Program?

Income thresholds are based on household size and are adjusted periodically by BC Hydro. As a general guide, a household of four earning under approximately $85,000–$95,000 typically qualifies. HVAC Coquitlam will pull your specific eligibility at no charge — you'll need your most recent Notice of Assessment or qualifying document from BC Hydro. We do the paperwork either way.

Do I need to use a registered CleanBC contractor to get the rebate?

Yes — this is a hard requirement. The contractor must be registered with CleanBC and submit the rebate application on your behalf. Using an unregistered contractor means you forfeit the rebate entirely. HVAC Coquitlam is a registered CleanBC contractor and handles all submissions as part of every heat pump installation.
